Written by M&M, known affectionately in the NAFO community as @FightStrong106:
On the evening of May 23rd, we gathered at my mother-in-law's apartment for her birthday celebration. She's not originally from Kyiv, but recently started working here a few months ago, so it was a treat for us all to have her here for her birthday. We had a great time at her apartment and then returned home. That night, enemy forces attacked the city. This was one of the biggest attacks that Kyiv has seen since 2022. A drone was intercepted over her building. The apartment was not damaged by the drone itself, but when firefighters came to put out fires and clean the mess, they needed to break her windows to access the building and it was flooded, making it unlivable. We immediately moved her and her family in our apartment: mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and her boyfriend. Now we have six people and two cats in an apartment just shy of 50 square meters. We love that we can help them, but it has been hard. They all work and need to take the bus about 45 minutes each way to get there and back. We have air mattresses covering the apartment and no personal space. There is also the financial strain of having to feed six people very suddenly. They are only paid once a month, so it has been hard to provide food for everyone. Thankfully, we have found a perfect apartment for them that is close to their work and and has enough room for the four of them. The agent is willing to waive her fee because of the circumstances and the landlord is willing to split the security deposit over two months instead of one. With the money they have come up with, we are still about $440 short of being able to secure the apartment. Places rent very quickly here in Kyiv, and I fear if they do not get this place, it will take another month for them to have enough to move without the agent waiving the fee and the landlord being kind with the deposit. I hope you will consider helping my family recover from this horrible situation.

NOTE FROM SLAVA UKRAINI'S CHIEF COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER:
M&M is doing her best to protect her family's privacy while still securing funds to help them out as soon as possible. I have independently verified this information and have been in touch with M&M on a daily basis. I was also in the city when this attack happened and can confirm the devastating effects. I have raised the fundraising goal to $500 to allow for basic necessities such as groceries, hygiene items, and the cost of taxis.
